Summer Fruit · Week 2
Joy
Chara - Galatians 5:22-23
"Do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength."
Nehemiah 8:10
1
"I'll have joy when my circumstances change."

We tie joy to a later time - marriage, a new job, better finances, kids growing up. But postponing joy for an outcome that may never arrive is what Proverbs calls "hope deferred" - and it makes the heart sick. (Prov. 13:12)

Truth
Joy is not the product of a circumstance. It is the presence of God in any circumstance. Paul wrote with joy from prison. Stephen faced death with joy. Jesus endured the cross with joy - not because of the situation, but regardless of it.
2
"If I'm struggling emotionally, I'm failing spiritually."

We believe sadness and joy can't coexist - that if we had more faith, we wouldn't feel the way we feel. This ties shame around our neck. David lamented. Jeremiah wept. Jesus wept at Lazarus's tomb - yet all were filled with joy.

Truth
Joy isn't pretending it's okay. Joy is knowing it's going to be okay. "Though sorrow lasts for the night, joy comes in the morning." (Ps. 30) He is near to the brokenhearted. (Ps. 34) - Speak to your soul like David did: "Hope in God; I shall again praise him." (Ps. 43:5)
3
"Joy is just a personality trait."

We confuse cheerfulness or positivity with joy. "I'm just not wired that way." But fruit isn't about how you were born - it's about what grows in you as you stay connected to the vine.

Truth
Joy is a fruit, not a personality trait. The Holy Spirit produces joy in any person regardless of their natural "cheer level." Joy isn't something you're born with - it's something you're filled with.

How do we grow joy? Holy habits of a healthy life.
Presence Giving Sharing Meeting Gathering Serving
"Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me… Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing."
John 15:4-5 ESV

Which joy lie do I most need to confront this week?
Where have I been postponing joy? What am I waiting for before I receive it?
What is one holy habit I can commit to this week to abide in Jesus?
Prayer
Jesus, teach me to abide in You instead of my circumstances. Grow true joy in me - not from what I get, but from who You are. May that joy overflow to the world around me. Amen.
